One number gets you an answer. Measure the outside diameter at the widest point of the bottle body — not the neck, not the cap — and read the size off the scale.

If you haven't got a ruler
A ruler laid across a curved bottle reads short. Wrapping is more accurate anyway, and a strip of ticket roll is always within reach.
Wrap a strip of paper around the widest part of the bottle body.
Mark where it overlaps itself, then lay the strip flat and measure to the mark.
Divide by 3.14. That's your diameter — put it in the box above.
One thing that catches people out
Don't work back from the bottle's volume. Two 32-ounce bottles from different suppliers can measure differently across, and a 16-ounce bottle can measure the same as a 32-ounce one. The diameter is the only number that decides the fit.
